another summer dress

new summer dress. . . momma made it! new summer dress. . . momma made it!
I made this new summer dress (McCalls #M4817) for Maria because the purple one I made (blogged May 16, 2006) sort of fell apart after a few washings. It's still in fair shape but needs some minor repairs. There's nothing I dislike more than having to work on something that has already received the "FINISHED" stamp! Needless to say, it's in the "repair queue".

This plaid dress has a few changes from the pattern instructions. I didn't add a zipper and I chose to make the skirt out of one whole piece as opposed to the tiers--this is also an option in the pattern, but I just used up the fabric I had without measuring. I didn't hem the bottom of the skirt because it's the selvage--OOOOhhh, shame on me!!! I think it looks cool and besides it was one less step to finished! I love shortcuts!!!

I will make more of these dresses for the girls and just have them wear a t-shirt/turtleneck underneath. Later this week I will post about a great dress "partner" I have sewn.

NOTE: Notice the planter behind Maria. Now, compare it to the one below and see the growth! Amazing what warm weather, water and some lovin' will do!

Very cute dress! I never thought to cut out a skirt to use the selvage as the hem, great idea.
I love that planter, so beautiful. Right now our planters are so overgrown it's scary.
